Kireedam : An evergreen treasure of Mollywood

Kireedam, a 1989 Malayalam film which can be considered as a cultural treasure for every Malayali. Film is written by A. K. Lohithadas and directed by Sibi Malayil. Mohanlal played the lead character. Kireedam is a realistic depiction of Sethu’s life and his way to an undesired crowning.

Thilakan, Parvathy, Mohan Raj, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Sreenath, Murali, Kundara Johny, Jagathy Sreekumar, Cochin Haneefa, Usha, Jagadish, Philomina, Mamukkoya, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Maniyanpilla Raju,Thikkurissy Sukumaran and Kanakalatha played other pivotal roles. N. Krishnakumar (Kireedam Unni) together with Dinesh Panicker produced evergreen hit film Kireedam.

Movie depicts story of Sethumadhavan and how his hopes went down by fate and human falling. For the character Sethumadhavan, Mohanlal won 1989 National Film Award-Special Jury Award. He portrayed pain and feelings of young man whose life is shattered.

M. G. Sreekumar won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Singer for beautiful songs in Kireedam. Actor Keerikkadan Jose became popular after Kireedam. Even after decades, he is known for that iconic character. Cochin Haneefa made his debut as a comedian in Kireedam movie. Till 1989, he used to play villain roles. In 2007, Cochin Haneefa played the same role in Tamil version of Kireedam.

The skilled S. Kumar took the cinematographer’s role for this film and editing is by L. Bhoominathan. Kireedam was released on 7th July 1989. Later movie made other language versions in Telugu (Rowdyism Nasinchali in 1990), Kannada (Modada Mareyalli in 1991), Hindi (Gardish in 1993) and Tamil (Kireedam in 2007).

Melodious 2 songs composed by Johnson. They are “Kaneer Poovinte” and “Medaponnodam”, which are penned by Kaithapram. For the song “Kaneer Poovinte”, singer M. G. Sreekumar won his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

Movie talks about a young aspiring Sethumadhavan, whose life became a hell and all of his and his family’s dream shattered. Fate and the circumstance were against him and thus he turned as a noted criminal. Also, the characters of Sethumadhavan and Head Constable Achuthan Nair, father of Sethumadhavan still stays close to our hearts. Talented Mohanlal and Thilakan shows how much an actor has to breath the life of the character. They both are experts in conveying their emotions through their eyes. Thilakan did an awesome character of a father, who is forced to watch helplessly as his son’s bright future deteriorates before his eyes.

Sethumadhavan played by Mohanlal, the sincere cop cum father role by Thilakan, the lead female character by Parvathi, the local goon played by Cochin Haneefa, the one of the best villain role of Keerikadan Jose are still in the memory of all who saw the film.
