Best biopic movies in Malayalam you must watch

A biopic is basically a film that features the life story of a real person or a particular incident involving the person. In Mollywood, a lot of biopic films have been produced and most often they have gone unnoticed, thanks to lack of media coverage. However, since the new millennia, things have begun to change for Mollywood.

Here is the list of best Malayalam biopic movies of all time:



Pazhassiraja is one of the best biopic movies in Malayalam, based on the life of Pazhassi Raja, who lived in the 18th century. Movie was directed by Hariharan and hit theaters on 16 October 2009. Pazhassiraja movie depicts the life of a legendary king of Malabar region who fought against the British, before the Sepoy mutiny of 1857. The film was written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair.

Twenty seven crore budget movie was bankrolled by Gokulam Gopalan. Mammootty played role of Pazhassiraja. Other prominent characters are handled by Sarath Kumar, Manoj K. Jayan, Kanika Subramaniam, Thilakan, Padmapriya, Harry Key, Linda Arsenio, Peter Handley Evans, and Jagathi Sreekumar. Ilaiyaraaja created the music score and soundtrack and Oscar-winner Rasool Pookutty did sound design.

Sarath Kumar portrayed chief lieutenant to Pazhashi Raja, Edachena Kunkan and this movie was his debut in Mollywood. Suresh Gopi was originally cast for the role of Edachena Kunkan and, he refused to accept the role. The film bagged National Film Award for Best Audiography, Best Background Score and Special Jury Award (for Padmapriya).

Ennu Ninte Moideen


Ennu Ninte Moideen is one of the best biopic movies in Malayalam, among 2015 released movies. R. S. Vimal directed this movie, based on the real life love story of B. P. Moideen and Kanchanamala. They lived in the 1960s in Mukkam, Kozhikode. It’s written by R S Vimal.

Prithviraj Sukumaran-Parvathy pair played characters of Moideen and Kanchanamala. Other prominent characters are played by Tovino Thomas, Bala, Saikumar, Lena, M. Jayachandran and Ramesh Narayan composed music for this one of the best biopic movies in Malayalam, which are released 2015. Movie tells the tragic love story of Moideen and Kanchana Mala( also known as Kanchana).

Moideen was a member of renowned Muslim family and Kanchana Mala belongs to Hindu aristocratic family. Both families opposed their relationship. They communicated through letters. Kanchanamala was caught and she was not allowed to speak anyone outside. Moideen also doesn’t agree to part ways with Kanchana .

Finally, Moideen and Kanchana decide to elope from their place Mukkam and Moideen dies in a boating accident during his way back, after collecting their passports. After hearing this, Kanchana attempted to commit suicide. Moideen’s mother stops her and took Kanchana her home. In the end, Kanchana decided to live as Moideen’s unmarried widow.



Celluloid is a Malayalam film based on the life story of father of Malayalam cinema, J.C. Daniel. Celluloid depicts his love for cinema and this movie belongs to the list of best biopic movies in Malayalam. Celluloid movie reached theatres in 2013. Movie was written and directed by Kamal and was produced by Kamal Ubaid. Prithviraj, Mamta Mohandas, Sreenivasan, and Chandni appeared in lead roles. The film depicts the making of film Vigathakumaran and the story of P. K. Rosie who was heroine of Vigathakumaran movie.

The film was based on Life of J. C. Daniel as described in his biography, which was written by Chelangatt Gopalakrishnan. Movie tells, how he made his dream of making a movie and the problems he faced for getting actors for the movie. Celluloid, one of the best biopic movies in Malayalam was released on 15th February 2013. Celluloid movie bagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. The film won seven Kerala State Film Awards, which includes Award for Best Film and Best Actor (Prithviraj who played the character of J C Daniel).



Makaramanju is a 2011 released romantic drama, which was written and directed by Lenin Rajendran. This movie is considered to be one of the best biopic movies in Malayalam. This movie depicts certain stages of life of celebrated painter Raja Ravi Varma. Story of epic character Pururavas also narrated in this movie. Lead characters were played by Cinematographer Santhosh Sivan played the roles of Raja Ravi Varma and Pururavas, while Karthika Nair appeared as Suganda Baai and Urvashi.

Story of Raja Ravi Varma at a certain stage in his life was portrayed in Makaramanju. Ravi Varma was in the process of painting and the theme was Pururavas. Pururavas, the legendary king fell in love with Urvashi, a heavenly nymph. She later agrees to become Pururavas’s wife on certain conditions and Urvashy told that, she will disappear as soon as she finds that conditions were violated. Later she disappeared. Pururavas couldn’t find her and then he united with his lover. Relationship between, Ravi Varma and his model Sugandha Bai acquired certain shades of Urvashi-Pururavas relationship.

Makaramanju won IPRESCI Prize for Best Malayalam Film at the International Film Festival of Kerala in 2010 and Second Best Film Award in Kerala State Film Awards. Ramesh Narayan handled music for the movie and Madhu Ambat handled the camera. Movie got released in 30 September 2011 and was distributed by Sree Gokulam Films.



Aami movie is also one of the best biopic movies in Malayalam. Movie was based on the life of famous writer Kamala Surayya. Aami movie was written and directed by Kamal. Manju Warrier played the character of Kamala Surayya. Murali Gopy, Tovino Thomas, and Anoop Menon appeared in movie as male leads. The film reached theaters on 9 February 2018.

Aami movie shows us the life of writer Madhavikutty. Movie portrays her childhood, family life and conversion to Islam. Manju Warrier shared Best Actress award in 2018 for her performance in this movie. Earlier, Vidya Balan was signed for the role of Kamala Surayya, and later backed out. Same happened with Prithviraj and Tovino Thomas took his role. Murali Gopi played the role Kamala’s husband, Madhava Das. Ottappalam, Mumbai, Kolkata and Ernakulam were the main locations. Tovino appeared as her imaginary lover and Ranji Panicker as magazine editor.



Yugapurushan movie tells us the life and times of Sree Narayana Guru. Yugapurushan is another best biopic movie in Malayalam. R Sukumaran directed the movie and Thalaivasal Vijay played the lead role as Sree Narayana Guru. Devotion to Sree Narayana Guru prompted Director Sukumaran in making this movie. Mohanlal was initially cast in a cameo role as Swami Vivekananda and later, its withdrew from movie.

Movie mainly focused on Sree Narayana Guru’s life and his teachings. Events such as Aruvikkara movement and Vaikom Sathyagraha was detailed in this movie. Also movie depicts the fights for caste establishment by an intercaste couple portrayed by Navya Nair and Kalabhavan Mani. Another couple story was played by Jagathy Sreekumar and Kalpana, in which drunken husband returns to his life with the blessings of Sree Narayana Guru. Movie was released on 5 February 2010.



Captain movie is one of the best biopic movies in Malayalam, written and directed by Prajesh Sen. He depicts the story of former captain of Indian national football team, V P Sathyan in his directorial debut movie. Jayasurya and Anu Sithara played the lead roles as V P Sathyan And Anitha Sathyan respectively and other casts includes, Siddique, Deepak Parambol, Renji Panicker, Shaju Kurup, Lakshmi Sharma and Kamal Varadoor. Jayasurya got injured during the Santhosh Trophy match sequence shooting.

T L George under the banner of Goodwill Entertainments bankrolled for the movie and movie got released in 16 February 2018. Gopi Sundar composed music and Roby Raja handled cinematography. Vatta Parambath Sathyan, who is commonly known as V P Sathyan begun his career in 1983 and led the Indian team to Gold medal in 1995 SAF Games. He has a prominent role in bringing the Indian team in its heights. When he found difficult to handle the financial pressure, Sathyan committed suicide at the age of 41. Captain movie beautifully narrated the story of legend football player from Kerala, is one of the best biopic movies in Malayalam.



Clint, a movie based on the real life story of prodigy Edmund Thomas Clint, who drawn over 25000 paintings within his life of almost seven years. Master Alok played the character Clint, the wonder kid. Real life Clint was suffering from renal failure and died when he was just six years and 11 months old. The movie was directed by Harikumar. Other prominent casts includes Unni Mukundan, Rima Kallingal, Vinay Forrt, Renji Panicker, Salim Kumar, Joy Mathew and K P A C Lalitha. Music was composed by Ilayaraaja and lyrics was penned by Prabha Varma.

Its been more than three decades after Clint left the world of paintings, and his story in silver screen starts with an intro of young prodigy by M.T. Joseph and Chinnamma Joseph, his real life parents. Clint painted wonders one after another every paper. Hindu festivals and traditional events were his favorite subjects. Alok has resembles the real-life Clint and he brought many shades of emotions on to the screen.
